Winning schools’ students will also given access to a free sustainability workshop on how to manage the hydrofarm as well as a partnership with the Jamaica Horticultural Society. But what is hydroforming, and how can your school be in with a chance to win?

What is Hydrofarming?

Hydrofarming is often also referred to as hydroponics and is a method of growing plants without soil. Instead, plants are grown in a water-based, nutrient-rich solution. Hydrofarming is a great approach for growing a wide variety of crops, from leafy greens to herbs and even fruits.

Hydrofarming offers a wide range of benefits over traditional farming.

Benefits of Hydrofarming in Jamaica

Despite generating only 10% of greenhouse gas emissions, the Caribbean is suffering the worst of all climate change. Earlier this year Hurricane Beryl left southern Jamaica devastated, hitting with greater impact earlier than ever before.

Climate change has also left Jamaica open to drought, which makes water management incredibly important.

Hydrofarming is Efficient

The name, hydrofarming, can be a little misleading. Hydroponic farming methods need up to 90% less water than traditional farming methods. This is one of the biggest advantages of hydrofarming in a country with Jamaica’s climate challenges. Hydrofarming is incredibly efficient by operating on a closed loop that recycles water and nutrients.

Hydroforming is a Space-saver

Hydroponic systems are more compact and space-efficient. This makes the system specifically useful for schools in Jamaica which may not have massive amounts of space. Traditional farming methods are generally flat, while hydrofarming systems can be built upwards, maximizing space.

Hydroponic systems can produce up to 4 times as many crops as a traditional system in the same area.

Hydrofarming is Educational

Finally, these hydrofarming systems offer schools an incredible opportunity to teach children environmental awareness, about farming methods and the value of food and nutrition. Fresh vegetables grown on-site can provide healthy options for school meals, promoting better nutrition among students.
